Newcastle United Are Hopeful Of Matt Targett Deal

Target Important for Villa

Matt Targett is reportedly on Eddie Howe’s radar, as he looks to tie up a deal before the end of the transfer window.

The 26-year-old has been a key part of the Aston Villa side for a few seasons now. Since moving to the Midlands from Southampton in 2019, Targett has slowly become a valuable squad player. Last season he played every single Premier League game for his side.

This campaign he has played 17 times thus far in the league. However, with the arrival of new manager Steven Gerrard, one has to wonder how Targett’s game will evolve.

Magpies’ Defence in Need of Additions

Eddie Howe’s side need defensive reinforcement. Newcastle have conceded 45 goals so far this season, and as such, they boast the second-worst defensive record in the league. Hence, it is no surprise that Howe is looking to bolster their back-line to aid their survival hopes.

Additionally, Targett can bring some attacking prowess from the back, as he attacks down the left flank often, possessing a fair amount of pace. Unsurprisingly, this style of play would suit the system Howe enjoys deploying.

A busy first window for Eddie Howe

Newcastle United and Eddie Howe have been busy during the transfer window. Their most recent signing was Bruno Guimaraes from Lyon. Howe has also snapped up Chris Wood and Kieran Trippier in recent weeks.

Now with just one day in the January transfer window remaining, the club have their sights set on Matt Targett. At this point, no deal has been made, however, the club are optimistic they can get a deal done before the window slams shut.
