According to Luke Edwards of The Telegraph, various Newcastle United signings are getting closer. Edwards confirmed that progress was being made on two promising incomings, while Sky Sports have reported a major leap in the Magpies’ pursuit of Diego Carlos from Sevilla.

Multiple Newcastle United Signings Getting Closer

Already Active This Transfer Window but Looking for More

Since their Saudi takeover earlier this season, Newcastle United will have been looking forwards to the 2022 January transfer window. This month would provide the side with their first opportunity to put to use the various funds provided for them by their new owners, and so far there has indeed been movement, although maybe not as much as fans would optimistically have hoped for.

The first signing of the new regime was that of Kieran Trippier, who returned to England after a spell in Spain with Atletico Madrid. The 31-year-old’s superior crossing ability is expected to make a large difference to the Magpies offensively, while he will also bolster their weak defence.

This was swiftly followed by the smart move to buy striker Chris Wood from relegation rivals Burnley. The New Zealand international played a vital part in his former side’s attack, and without him, they are going to face even more of an uphill struggle to remain in the Premier League beyond this season.

There were, however, bigger expectations for the club. In particular, Eddie Howe appears to be in desperate need of a central defender to strengthen his leaky defence. Newcastle have turned their attention elsewhere after failing in their pursuit of Lille’s Sven Botman,

More Exciting Deals in the Immediate Future

Luke Edwards’ report provided hope for fans of the Magpies, who had slowly been losing faith in their club’s ability to attract top-quality players.

Talks for 28-year-old centre-back Diego Carlos of Sevilla are currently Newcastle’s most advanced, but it is reported that a surprise is not unlikely. At the moment, there are two players who are probable additions, although one remains nameless to this point.

In more positive news for Eddie Howe’s side, Sky Sports are reporting that Carlos has submitted a written transfer request to his club amid Newcastle’s interest. This is a massive boost in the Northern English side’s chase for his signature, as their targets’ willingness to move to St James’ Park has tended to be the biggest obstacle they have faced.

To an extent, money is now no object for Newcastle United.
