Struggling for Game Time at Old Trafford

Van de Beek has been struggling for game time ever since he moved to Old Trafford.

The Dutchman never found favour under former manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer. When Ralf Rangnick replaced the United legend, many thought it would see Van de Beek liberated, but alas this has not been the case, and he continues to start games only very sporadically despite the Red Devils’ problems in midfield.

The 24-year-old moved to the North of England in the summer of 2020 after United finished third in the Premier League. Fans believed that securing Champions League football would result in a relatively active transfer window, but the financial troubles caused by the outbreak of Coronavirus coupled with Bruno Fernandes having been signed for over £45 million in January 2020 meant the Red Devils were apparently not in a position to splash out on big-money transfers that summer.

Eventually, then-Ajax star Van de Beek was signed, but it has been reported that Solskjaer didn’t want him. Instead, the Norwegian had his sights set on the likes of Jadon Sancho and Jude Bellingham. This could have played a part in his lack of playing time under Solskjaer, but with Rangnick now giving him just as few chances, there may be deeper roots to this problem.

Van de Beek was reportedly stopped from going on loan to Everton last summer. This move would most likely not have ended particularly well for him, though, with the Toffees currently languishing in 16th having just sold their star left-back, fired many key members of staff, and now sacked their manager Rafael Benitez.
