Genoa are set to sign right-back Silvan Hefti from Swiss side Young Boys. The 24-year-old would be the first player to sign for the Italian outfit under Andriy Shevchenko who was appointed last November.

Genoa are set to complete the signing of former Switzerland U21 defender Silvan Hefti from Young Boys. According to Fabrizio Romano, the Italian side will pay €5 million to David Wagner’s team to secure the transfer of the 24-year-old right back.

Hefti started his career in his home country with St Gallen, in 2015, and was an established full-back in the Swiss Super League before moving to Young Boys in 2020. He has made 52 appearances for Young Boys in his one-and-a-half seasons with the club and was a starter in the side that defeated Manchester United 2-1 in the Champions League last September.

Andriy Shevchenko Faces an Uphill Task

It has not been smooth sailing for Genoa so far this season. The Griffins have found themselves languishing in the relegation spots after a very poor start to the season and have already seen a change to their management, with Andriy Shevchenko replacing Davide Ballardini in early November.

Despite the change in management, they have picked up just a single point following the arrival of the Ukrainian. The last month has seen Genoa losing four of their five league matches with their only point coming in a 0-0 draw with Atalanta at the end of the last game week.

Injuries have also played a part in Genoa’s poor start with several first-team players spending time on the sidelines. Shevchenko will be hoping that Hefti could add much-needed depth to his squad.

A run of just one league win in 19 matches has helped Genoa to eighteenth in the Seria A table.
