Sunderland Transfer Rumours: Potential Ins and Outs Ahead of Today’s Deadline

With the transfer deadline fast approaching, it could be a busy day on Wearside. Here are the latest Sunderland transfer rumours.

Transfer deadline day is upon us once again and, similar to many other clubs, it is expected to be a busy day at Sunderland. Lee Johnson is aiming to build a side capable of taking the club back to the Championship and the Sunderland transfer rumours are gathering pace ahead of today’s deadline.

The Black Cats have been patient in the transfer market in the hope of bringing quality rather than quantity into the club. Seven players have so far arrived but more could follow today. Plus, several could depart on what is expected to be a busy day on Wearside. Here is a look at just some of the deals that could happen at the Stadium of Light today ahead of the 11pm deadline.

Sunderland Transfer Rumours on Deadline Day

Potential Incomings

Leon Dajaku

Bayern Munich winger Leon Dajaku is set for a loan move to Wearside. The 20-year-old German joined Union Berlin on loan in January. However, they have decided against making the move permanent. Therefore, Bayern are now looking at alternatives and the Stadium of Light is one of them according to the Northern Echo.

Should Dajaku arrive on Wearside, Sunderland could have a real crowd pleaser to entertain the fans if the German Football Association coach Pascal Stöffler is correct. He said: “Leon was the first and only player I’ve seen take the ball from kick-off and score straightaway. He’s technically very strong, especially in one-on-ones. A real street footballer.”

Ron-Thorben Hoffmann

Bundesliga News are reporting that 22-year-old goalkeeper Ron-Thorben Hoffmann will sign a new deal at Bayern Munich and then head to Sunderland on loan. The shot-stopper is yet to make his senior debut for Bayern but has been a regular for their reserve side.

The report also suggests that should the Black Cats gain promotion this season then a clause in the loan deal will mean that they will be obliged to sign the player on a permanent basis.

Ryan Alebiosu

Arsenal’s young fullback has been linked with a move to the Stadium of Light in recent days. The youngster, who can play in both full-back positions and further up the field, could join on loan.

The 19-year-old is a product of the Arsenal academy and although he has yet to make his senior debut, he has been a regular for the U23s and appeared in the EFL Trophy.

Potential Outgoings

Will Grigg

The Northern Ireland striker could finally leave Wearside today following a torrid time since his big-money move in 2018. Grigg was expected to shoot the Black Cats to promotion but has looked a shadow of his former self and has struggled to find form and more importantly the net.

Doncaster Rovers are reportedly leading the chase for the former Wigan Athletic forward and are hoping to seal a permanent deal by the end of the day. The Sunderland Echo are reporting that Rovers are pursuing the striker and hope a deal can be made.

Jack Diamond

Twenty-one-year-old winger Diamond could be set for a loan move. League Two side Harrogate Town, who Diamond helped to promotion from the National League in 2020, are once again interested in a loan deal, according to the Northern Echo.

Speaking ahead of deadline day, Sunderland head coach Lee Johnson discussed the possibility of Jack Diamond leaving on loan. He said: “We have talked about a loan.

“I’ve said many times that to properly develop a young player, they probably need 25 starts across a season. That’s no different to 90% of our players and especially the younger ones. We’ve had a lot of loan offers for Jack and clubs showing interest in a loan deal.”

Denver Hume

The full-back is out of contract at the club and has rejected a new deal. Hume, however, is still at Sunderland recovering from injury. A deal to take Hume away from the club does not have to be completed today; however, progress could begin that would see the left-back leave Wearside in the near future.

Benji Kimpioka

The Swedish forward spent time on loan at Torquay United last summer and Lee Johnson and his team are now deciding whether to send the speedy youngster back out on loan to help aid his development. According to the Sunderland Echo, IK Sirius of Sweden are interested in his services.
