Sunderland are closing in on another new addition according to Richard Mennear of the Sunderland Echo. Arsenal full-back Ryan Alebiosu could be set to join the Black Cats on loan until the end of the season. Lee Johnson has so far added seven new signings to his squad this summer but wants more new recruits before the transfer window closes on Tuesday night.

Ryan Alebiosu Close to Joining Sunderland

Alebiosu Set to Become Sunderland’s Sixth Premier League Signing

Should Alebiosu sign on loan before the transfer deadline, he would become the Black Cats’ sixth signing from a Premier League club this summer. He would follow Callum Doyle from Manchester City, Frederick Alves from West Ham United and Nathan Broadhead from Everton who have joined on loan. Full-backs Dennis Cirkin and Niall Huggins joined on permanent deals from Tottenham Hotspur and Leeds United respectively.

Who is Ryan Alebiosu?

A product of Arsenal’s Hale End academy, 19-year-old Alebiosu began his career as a winger but was converted into a full-back when playing for Arsenal’s U18s. He stayed at right-back when he was promoted to the U23 squad last summer, where he played 21 times in both the Premier League 2 and the EFL Trophy.

Capable of playing in both full-back positions, Alebiosu, although yet to make his senior debut for the Gunners, could be an important signing during the long League One season ahead.

New Sunderland Squad Taking Shape

Despite a slow start to their transfer dealings, Lee Johnson’s new-look Sunderland squad is taking shape. Should Alebiosu sign, it would take Johnson up to eight new signings as he looks to build a squad capable of finally gaining promotion to the Championship. The Sunderland faithful are desperate for a return after what is now their fourth season in England’s third tier in a row.

A mixture of youth and experience have been brought in to add to the exciting youngsters and older pros already at the club. Sunderland have won five of the first six games this season and take on Wycombe Wanderers, who were relegated from the Championship last season, at the Stadium of Light this weekend.
