Lyon in Talks to Sign Jerome Boateng

Jerome Boateng

Without a club since leaving Bayern Munich at the end of last season, Jerome Boateng could finally get his move. According to Fabrizio Romano, Ligue 1 side Lyon are in talks with the central defender as the deadline approaches to seal the transfer.

Both Sevilla and Hertha Berlin have pulled out of any potential negotiations, leaving it a one-horse race for the German’s signature. Having already secured Xherdan Shaqiri, it would come as little surprise if Lyon went onto sign Boateng and add even more experience to the current side.

An Ideal Move

A side of Lyon’s stature suits Jerome Boateng. At 32-years-old, it became clear last season at Bayern Munich that he can no longer player at the top table of European football week in, week out. At a side like Lyon, who are in the Europa League this season, the German defender would be able to play every week without necessarily looking out of depth.

One factor that makes any Potential move interesting, however, is Lionel Messi’s transfer to Paris Saint-Germain. Both Boateng and the former Barcelona man have had some great battles over the years. Most famously, Messi floored Boateng with a nutmeg in the Champions League before dinking the ball over Manuel Neuer for a fantastic goal a few years back.

It hasn’t been a one-side battle, though. Boateng was part of the Germany side that beat Argentina in the 2014 World Cup final and the side that smashed Barcelona 8-2 in the Champions League semi-final in 2020.

If the pair meet again in Ligue 1, we’ll likely see the final collision, with Boateng looking to get the better of the Barcelona legend once more. With the hours ticking by, however, Lyon must act quickly if they want to seal the move. The former Bayern man needs a move; Lyon need the experience, potentially making it a match made in heaven.
