Italian journalist and transfer specialist Fabrizio Romano has confirmed via Twitter that Alvaro Odriozola has departed Real Madrid and has joined Italian side Fiorentina on loan.

Alvaro Odriozola Departs Real Madrid for Italy

Loan Deal Agreed

Odriozola was rumoured to have been wanted by Premier League club Tottenham Hotspur, but the right-back has now agreed a loan deal until 2022 to join Serie A side Fiorentina. The players’ salary will be paid by Fiorentina but there is no option to buy at to end of the term.

Whilst Fiorentina were always considered favourites to capture Odriozola, Tottenham also held an interest in the 25 year old player who was said by to be considering his next move and ultimately he has chosen Italy.

No Option to Buy Alvaro Odriozola

With the player tied to a contract with Real Madrid until 2024, they have no desire to sell the player and manager Carlo Ancelotti would prefer him to get game time and be ready to fight for his place at the Bernabeu for the 2022/23 season. For that reason, it comes as no surprise to see no buy option included.

With Real’s much publicised financial difficulties, the fact that Fiorentina have agreed to pay Odriozola’s salary will help them to reduce their wage bill as they seek to ensure that they are compliant with financial fair play regulations.

Deal Could Help Mbappe Move

With these wages removed from the bill, it will help Real in their pursuit of Paris Saint-Germain striker Kylian Mabappe, who remains their number one target this summer. PSG have already made it clear that Mbappe will only be sold under their terms and for no less than £180 million, however.

Real had a first bid rejected and have now returned with a second, but are still short of the asking price.
