Inter Milan Closing in on Joaquin Correa

Inter Milan are closing in on Lazio forward Joaquin Correa to bolster their attack, according to Fabrizio Romano. This comes after the injury to Marcus Thuram, who Inter were originally chasing. Thuram is set to be sidelined for up to two months, so Inter are now moving towards other options before the transfer window comes to a close.

The Player and the Fit

There are two reasons why Inter deem Correa as a fit. First of all, they sold their top forward in Romelu Lukaku to Chelsea. His production from last season is going to be extremely difficult to replicate, but Inter need to attempt to at least somewhat fill the void. Secondly, after Antonio Conte’s departure, Inter hired Simone Inzaghi as their manager. Inzaghi, of course, managed Lazio previously and knows Correa well.

Correa played quite well last season, scoring eight goals and providing four assists. The season prior, he scored one more goal, but played two more matches. It’s important to note, however, that Correa is not a traditional striker. He spends the majority of his time on the pitch as a second-striker or playing on the wing. At Inter, Correa could line up behind Lautaro Martinez. This has potential to be a great mix as the duo are both Argentinian.

As of now, Inter have Edin Dzeko for Lukaku’s role. Although a talented veteran, it will likely take a couple of players to attempt to replicate Lukaku’s production. Adding in Dzeko and Correa is a solid haul.

All in all, Martinez is Inter’s key player this season. He played well last season, but they need him to explode if they’re truly going to contend to emerge as the Scudetto winners once again. Forming a strong partnership between him and Correa can be key.
