Leicester City Have Jannik Vestergaard Bid Accepted

Jannik Vestergaard

According to Dan Sheldon of The Athletic, Leicester City have had an opening bid of £15 million for Southampton defender Jannik Vestergaard accepted.

The news comes following the Foxes’ sudden defensive crisis. As things stand, Brendan Rodgers has just one natural centre-back to choose from in Caglar Soyuncu following injuries to Jonny Evans and Wesley Fofana, who has been ruled out until 2022, in pre-season.

Leicester had similar problems at the back last season when Soyuncu and Fofana suffered knocks, resulting in temporary position changes for Daniel Amartey and Wilfried Ndidi. It could be argued that their lack of depth at the back is the reason why they eventually failed to qualify for the Champions League. And, with that problem yet to be solved, more struggles await the Community Shield winners this season.

Southampton Holding Out for Bigger Offer

Leicester’s opening offer is thought to be £14 million with a further £1 million in add-ons. It came as no surprise initially to see the Saints react with stubbornness regarding their player. Following the departure of Danny Ings, they surely would have been keen to avoid any more summer exits ahead of the new season.

H0wever, after entering into talks this morning following Leicester’s initial bid, the two clubs have no agreed on a fee for the Denmark international.

It leaves Ralph Hasnehuttl’s squad looking worryingly weak; they no longer look a team ready to compete for a place in mid-table, but one certain for a relegation battle. The arrival of Adam Armstrong certainly helps their case, but he is yet to prove anything in the Premier League. If he brings his Blackburn Rovers form to St.Mary’s, then fans are in for a treat. If he fails to adjust, however, then Southampton could find themselves struggling to stay afloat.
