Leicester City manager Brendan Rodgers has confirmed that Wesley Fofana will be out until 2022. The defender suffered a ligament injury during the Foxes pre-season friendly against Villareal.

Leicester City’s to Be Without Wesley Fofana Until 2022

‘No Timeline’ for Fofana’s Return

The Foxes boss said to Sky Sports there is no timeline for Fofana’s return. The Frenchman was stretchered off the field during the Foxes pre-season friendly against Villareal after a strong tackle from Fer Nino.

After the match, the 20-year-old confirmed on social media that he suffered a fractured fibula.

Fofana will undergo surgery on Monday and will return to the club’s training facilities in the week. It has been said that the injury is worse than initially thought.

Rodgers said: “In and around his medial ligament, there was a lot more damage there than we’d hoped. The scan showed up it was quite substantial damage there.”

The news is not good for the club, even after they lifted the Community Shield. The FA Cup winners beat Manchester City 1-0 thanks to a late penalty from Kelechi Iheanacho.

This provides Rodgers with a selection dilemma ahead of the new season, as fellow centre-back Jonny Evans is a doubt for the Foxes’ opening game of the season.

Rodgers said that he will explore the possibility of signing a centre-back, and that the club have several targets in mind.

Fofana’s injury is a huge blow, as well as Evans’ doubt over his fitness. Playing 28 times in the league last season, Fofana has been a mainstay in the City squad. The timing could not be worse with a week until the new Premier League campaign.

The Foxes play Wolves in their season opener, and it will be interesting to see who lines up at the back in their first game of the season.
