Inter Milan Close in on Edin Dzeko as Roma Search for Strikers

Edin Dzeko

Bosnian striker Edin Dzeko has agreed personal terms with Inter Milan for a contract up to 2023. Terms were agreed, according to Fabrizio Romano, in preparation for Romelu Lukaku’s expected transfer to Chelsea.

Lukaku Replacements Needed

Last season, Romelu Lukaku was Inter’s top scorer, scoring 24 goals and providing 11 assists as the club won the Scudetto. Despite that, Inter’s financial problems meant they were forced to sell. Achraf Hakimi’s departure to Paris Saint-Germain seemed to fulfil that. Even then, Tottenham reportedly agreed a fee with Inter Milan for Lautaro Martinez.

Chelsea, however, threw a spanner into the works of both Tottenham and Inter. Their determination to land Lukaku convinced the Belgian to return, and Inter want to keep Martinez now. They plan to sign two strikers to replace Lukaku, with Dzeko being one of them. Duvan Zapata is a reported target, with Atalanta said to be readying a €40 million move for Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham to take his place.

Tottenham are still pushing to sign Martinez, but Inter are staying firm and a deal looks difficult. Tottenham have already signed Pierluigi Gollini and Cristian Romero from Atalanta, and Lautaro would be their third arrival from Serie A if a move is agreed.

Dzeko Set for Move

Bosnian forward Dzeko first joined Roma in 2016. A positive loan spell led to a permanent transfer in 2016. Dzeko has since scored 77 Serie A goals in 168 appearances. The 35-year old will add experience and goals. Inter are losing their primary goal threat, and they need an experienced striker to partner Martinez.

While personal terms are agreed, the transfer is far from done. Inter’s pursuit of Dzeko slightly delayed the Lukaku deal. Roma are now looking for a replacement, and Dzeko’s move will be confirmed once that is found. Chelsea’s Tammy Abraham is one of the strikers on their shortlist, while Arsenal’s Alexandre Lacazette is also being considered. The capital side have already signed Uzbek forward Eldor Shomurodov from Genoa.
