After reports of their interest earlier in the week, Tottenham Hotspur are now working on a deal to sign Takehiro Tomiyasi from Bologna, according to David Ornstein and Charlie Eccleshare of The Athletic.

Spurs have reportedly offered €15 for the Japanese international, but the Serie A outfit want closer to €17 million as well as add-ons.

New Spurs Staff Working on Deal

Spurs’ new director of football, Fabio Paratici, is leading the negotiations for the centre-back, while new manager Nuno Espirito Santo, who was announced on Wednesday as the successor to Jose Mourinho, is being kept up to date on the situation.

The club are in need of defensive reinforcements, with Serge Aurier looking likely to leave the club and Matt Doherty enduring a difficult first season in North London after his move from Wolverhampton Wanderers.

As well, Belgian centre-back Toby Alderweireld is coming towards the latter stages of his career, and fellow central defenders Davinson Sanchez and Eric Dier had periods where they struggled for form last season.

Spurs also possess Japhet Tanganga and Joe Rodon who can play centrally, but England U21 international Tanganga has been used more often as a right-back, and Rodon is yet to fully break into the side since his move from Swansea City.

Tomiyasu is able to play in either of those positions and could provide adept cover wherever he is tasked to play.

Tomiyasu’s Career So Far

Twenty-two-year-old Tomiyasu started out in his home country with Avispa Fukuoka, where he debuted as a 16-year-old.

After making 45 appearances in two seasons, he made the move to Europe and signed with Belgian side Sint-Truiden. He had a stellar campaign here, earning praise from Belgian media for his solid defensive performances and thus won the club’s Player of the Year award.

His form caught Bologna’s eye and he moved to the Italian club in 2019, where he has gone on to make over 60 appearances.
