Fabio Tavares Signs for Coventry City

Fabio Tavares

The transfer market is only hours away from slamming shut. Clubs are continuing to scramble and make any last-minute adjustments necessary. This is the last chance to roll the recruitment dice until after the season ends. Coventry City will be pleased to have landed one of their highly-rated targets from Rochdale. Fabio Tavares has permanently signed for Mark Robins’ squad.

Fabio Tavares to Start With Development Squad

The 20-year-old is joining the Sky Blues on a two-and-a-half year contract for an undisclosed fee. After rising through Rochdale’s youth ranks, Tavares has made 39 appearances in all competitions for the League One side. He found the back of the net four times for his former club.

The centre-forward, who can also play out wide if needs be, spent a portion of last season on loan with Curzon Ashton in the sixth-tier of English football. However, since he joined in the end of February, he did not have time to make an impact before the coronavirus shut down football.

Although Tavares does have senior squad experience in the tier below, Coventry City will need to evaluate his current talents before deciding whether to include him in their own match-day squads just yet.

Mark Robins Gives High Praise to Fabio Tavares

“We’re very pleased to sign Fabio and welcome him to the Club. He is a pacy attacking player with some really promising all-round attributes and has already impressed at first-team level for Rochdale. He is a very exciting prospect who we look forward to working with and helping him to continue his development,” said the Coventry City manager.

The Significance of His Signature

The Sky Blues currently sit 17th, seven points clear from the relegation zone (albeit with more matches played than 22nd-placed Rotherham United). Coventry City’s current top-scorer is midfielder Gustavo Hamer, who is on five goals for the season. With a lack of attacking threat, bringing in a prospect like Tavares puts pressure on Matt Godden and Tyler Walker. If their form does not improve, then Tavares could very well be called upon to lead the line.
