Liverpool Concerned About Severity of Joel Matip Injury

Matip injury

Following a 3-1 victory over Tottenham Hotspur, Liverpool fans would have been desperate for the continuation of good news. That good news has failed to arrive, though, with the Joel Matip injury described as ‘serious’ by Jurgen Klopp.

According to Paul Joyce of the Times, the defender has suffered an ankle ligament injury- leaving Liverpool worried about the severity of the damage done.

An injury of that type could see Joel Matip ruled out for a couple of months- leaving Jurgen Klopp without a single recognised centre-back to call on.

After Fabinho missed the Spurs game through injury with West Ham United fast approaching, Klopp may be forced into yet another new defensive pairing.

Liverpool Worried About Severity of Matip Injury

Liverpool May Have No Choice but to Sign a Centre-Back

With not a single fit centre-back to call on, and the January transfer window still open, now is the time for Liverpool to act. They simply cannot rely on midfielders to play the role of a central defender.

For most of this month, they have remained firm on their stance to not turn to the market. With Matip now potentially facing two months out, Liverpool may have no choice but to change their stance.

At this point, it may not even matter who the defender is. Its the fact that they are, in fact, a central defender which matters most. Now is not the time for Liverpool to be picky, or think about the future.

Instead, they must think about the present and fill the growing hole left by an injury-hit defence. Whether it be someone on loan or a permanent signing, a central defender must come in before the transfer window slams shut in under a week’s time.

If they fail to bring one in, Liverpool’s chances of securing top four may be thrown into doubt once more.
