Ethan Ampadu Has Big Decision to Make on Chelsea Future

Ethan Ampadu has a big decision to make about his club future if he is to achieve more game time, according to Wales manager Ryan Giggs.

The Chelsea youngster has found minutes easier to come by at international level of late, having made 13 appearances for his country. However, that could change if Giggs becomes unsatisfied with his exposure to club football.

Ampadu Endured Unsuccessful 2019/20 Season

Chelsea are reportedly looking to send the young Welshman on loan again next season. Daniel Farke’s Norwich City were looking to sign the midfielder ahead of the 2020/21 season, but this now looks unlikely to happen following the Canaries’ relegation last campaign.

The Athletic is reporting that a loan move to newly-promoted Fulham is on the cards, given Chelsea’s preference to grant Ampadu top-flight football next season.

The 19-year-old did spend last season on loan in the German top-flight with RB Leipzig but struggled to make an impression in the Bundesliga. Ampadu made only three appearances for the club in all competitions.

However, the player still very much has time on his side, and remains a prospect Chelsea are keen to develop, provided they find the right suitor for him ahead of the upcoming campaign.

Ryan Giggs Urges Ethan Ampadu to Think About His Future at Chelsea

Ampadu can operate in central defence or in midfield. His versatility makes him an enticing player for Frank Lampard at Chelsea, but the recent arrival of Thiago Silva means the youngster could be starved of minutes if he is to remain at Chelsea next season.

This is a possibility of which Wales boss Giggs is fully aware, and the 46-year-old addressed the issue when speaking to the media.

“Thiago is a quality centre-half and you can only learn from someone like that,” Giggs told Sky Sports.

“I want all the players to be playing regularly, but that sometimes isn’t the case.

“It’s that balance over whether they’re at a top club and surrounded by top players and improving every day, but ultimately you need minutes on the pitch.

“That’s a decision for Ethan. I’ve talked to him a lot about that.

“I think last year was maybe a little bit different as he had injuries. You could see from the game he played against Tottenham in the Champions League he was outstanding.

“Nothing fazes him, he’s a quality player, and he just needs to keep fit now,” concluded the Manchester United legend.
