REPORT: Lazio to Sign Fenerbahçe Striker Vedat Muriqi

Vedat Muriqi

Lazio have reportedly acquired striker Vedat Muriqi from Turkish Super Lig club Fenerbahçe. Fabrizio Romano reported the Serie A club had reached a deal with Fenerbahçe to bring in Muriqi.

The Kosovo international has been a lethal striker during his time in the Turkish top flight. During the 2019/20 season, he scored 15 goals in 32 league appearances. Lazio are gaining a very talented player who will join an already dangerous striker Ciro Immobile.

Added Depth

Lazio will gain further depth at striker by signing Muriqi. The club’s 3-5-2 formation requires a second player to join Immobile on the attack. Joaquin Correa has been the usual partner for Immobile as the second striker and now Muriqi will offer another option.

Correa’s nine goals in 30 Serie A appearances was tied for the second-best goal scoring record on Lazio’s squad along with Felipe Caicedo. Immobile was the only player to reach double digits in goals scored with his incredible 36 goals in Serie A. Lazio will hope Muriqi can help become the key second contributor for them when it comes to goal scoring.

Consistency in Turkey

Muriqi produced back-to-back seasons of 15 goals or more in his last two seasons in the Super Lig. He’s an aerial threat in the penalty area and has a physical presence that can cause opposing defenders trouble when trying to contain him. According to WhoScored.com statistics, all of Muriqi’s goals have come from either in the penalty area or in the six yard box.

The 26-year-old striker is going to be a dangerous player on set pieces and crosses into the box. He can certainly provide a threat as a subsitute and as an occasional starter in the lineup. As a result, this is a great signing for Lazio, should they complete it, who could gain a key second source of goals in Muriqi.
