Nine Arrested as Fans Gather at Anfield to Celebrate Liverpool’s Trophy Lift

Anfield

Nine people were arrested by police on Wednesday as thousands of Liverpool fans gathered outside Anfield after their 5-3 victory at home to Chelsea.

About 3,000 Liverpool fans trouped out to the stadium grounds as they celebrated lifting the Premier League trophy for the first time, and their first top-flight title in 30 years.

Defiance

Instructions were laid down by Merseyside Police Department, Liverpool City Council, Spirit of Shankly supporters group and the club itself, urging fans to celebrate at home.

The order was made to reduce risk of spreading the COVID-19 virus and prevent a repeat of the crowd gathering by Liverpool supporters after the Reds were confirmed Premier League winners last month.

However, thousands of fans were seen celebrating on the streets of Anfield, throwing fireworks and flares, and singing with the club’s flag.

A total of nine arrests were made by the police on suspicion of violence, being drunk and disorderly, drink and drug driving and assault.

Police Statement

In an official statement, the Merseyside Police expressed disappointment at the situation but thanked the majority of fans that adhered to their instructions.

Assistant Chief Constable Natalie Perischine, from Merseyside Police, said: “We put a comprehensive and appropriate policing operation in place ahead of the game, with the safety of the public paramount in our decision making. I want to thank all those fans who heeded advice to stay home and watch the celebrations on TV.

“Officers made a total of nine arrests outside Anfield last night for affray, assault, people who were drunk and disorderly and drug driving.

“The vast majority of the crowd were good-natured and had dispersed by 2am. Thankfully we didn’t see the sort of incidents of disorder and criminal damage we saw at the Pier Head on 27 June, the investigation into which has seen more than 20 arrests made to date.”
