The Reds were going through their 12th consecutive season at Championship level before football was paused due to coronavirus.

Forest’s final positions have varied hugely throughout those campaigns with a 3rd place finish in 2009-10 their highest.

Nottingham Forest almost returned to League One at the end of the 2016-17 season; they beat Ipswich Town on the final day to stay up at the expense of Blackburn Rovers.

The club has struggled to hold any financial might with various owners and managers causing trouble off-the-pitch.

But with Sabri Lamouchi at the helm and Evangelos Marinakis as the owner, Forest seem to have gained some stability.

The 155-year-old club came closest to promotion this season.

Lamouchi’s side were fifth, 10 points behind second-placed West Bromwich Albion, when football was suspended.

The Reds could still be promoted should matches be played behind closed doors; if the season is concluded and the final positions used to determine promotion, then Forest fans should remain hopeful.

Of the three sides alongside Forest in the play-off positions, Forest have won three of four of the fixtures.

Forest are yet to play Fulham at the City Ground or Preston at Deepdale.

The Reds beat Fulham at Craven Cottage, and were held to a draw by the Lilywhites in August.

Brentford, who Forest could play in the play-off semi-finals, are winless against the Reds this season, losing both by a 1-0 scoreline.
