Jordan Henderson: England’s Player of the Year

Jordan Henderson has always been a player who has divided opinion, both with Liverpool and England fans throughout his career. However, his managers have invariably viewed him as a central figure to their teams. Henderson was recently awarded the England Mens’ Player of the Year award for 2019, meaning he is now getting the plaudits that he deserves.

Recognition for Henderson at Last

Henderson has often faced criticism throughout his career. It has come in various forms from fans voicing their opinions to Sir Alex Ferguson criticising his “gait” in his autobiography. However, 2019 was a fantastic year for Henderson individually. He achieved his 50th England cap in March and helped the side qualify for the 2020 Euros. He also helped the team finish third in the UEFA Nations League.

Henderson is not a player who contributes many goals to the England side, though this is due to the role that he plays. He is expected to help retain possession and shield the defence from central midfield. Henderson being awarded England’s Player of the Year acknowledges that goals are not the only important part of the game.

A Tough Road to Get Here

Henderson is not a player who has had the easiest of careers. He was signed for Liverpool by Kenny Dalglish, though was later considered as part of a swap deal for Clint Dempsey under Brendan Rodgers. Henderson refused, showing an admirable fighting spirit and determination to fight for his place at Liverpool. This has been richly rewarded; he has captained the side to a Champions League, a Super Cup and a Club World Cup.

Henderson is now one of only five men to captain a Liverpool side to European glory. He could yet eclipse these men and become the first Reds player to lead a side to the Premier League title at the end of the season.
