Selling Danny Rose Weakens Tottenham Hotspur’s Defence

selling Danny Rose

Tottenham are heading away on their pre-season tour and whilst Vincent Janssen being left behind will surprise no one, another being left at home seems a strange decision. Danny Rose has been allowed to ‘explore other opportunities’. Selling Danny Rose weakens the Tottenham defence of it he does leave.

Selling Danny Rose Weakens Tottenham…For Now

Is Selling Danny Rose the Right Move For Spurs?

With Kieran Trippier sold to Atletico Madrid and selling Danny Rose now likely, Tottenham’s defence is starting to weaken, albeit with still time left in the transfer window for that to be rectified. Whilst the sale of Trippier is hardly surprising considering his inconsistent form last season, the sale of Rose is somewhat harder to fathom.

The Case for the Defence

Ben Davies has been rewarded with a new contract, yet Danny Rose, who was seen as being one of Spurs’ more consistent performers last season, is seemingly being shown the door. Rose has been open about his mental health problems and his honesty on the subject has been rightly well-received.

Prior to last season, he had seemingly played his last game for Spurs with some of his comments about having to google new players not going down well with boss Mauricio Pochettino. The deeper personal issues that came to the fore explained some of his comments but it was his attitude and passion that made sure he was vital in reaching the Champions League Final and finishing fourth in the Premier League.

Passion

After Tottenham beat Arsenal in the Carabao Cup shortly after a defeat to the same opposition in the league, his comments showed his passion and love for Tottenham. He truly understands derby matches;

“We were fully relishing the opportunity. Our only motivation was remembering the nonsense that Arsenal posted [on social media] after the game a few weeks ago. That was our motivation. Players that have only played ten games for Arsenal were getting ahead of themselves. We used that in a positive way. Karma is a … it’s a … you know. They fully deserve what they got, Arsenal.”

Sessegnon

Tottenham have been linked with Ryan Sessegnon pretty much continually since last summer. It seems that Pochettino is a fan and maybe that is why Rose may be deemed surplus to requirements.

It is also to be noted that Pochettino doesn’t believe in standing in players way and it may be that both player and club feel now is the right time to move on

Selling Danny Rose – Conclusion

Danny Rose remains a Tottenham player but his exclusion from the pre-season tour suggests he has played his last game for the club.

Should Sessegnon come in then it would be hard to argue against it being a positive signing but it’s also hard not to feel that selling Danny Rose could weaken the Tottenham defence.
