REPORT: England Defender Kieran Trippier Signs For Atletico Madrid

England defender Kieran Trippier has today joined Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur. The fee is believed to be £21.7 million.

England defender Kieran Trippier has signed for Atletico Madrid from Tottenham Hotspur. The deal is believed to be valued at £21.7 million. The right-back flew to Spain on Wednesday to undergo a medical and today the deal was confirmed by David Ornstein.

Trippier, who has 16 caps for his country, leaves Spurs after four years. The 28-year-old who starred for England at the World Cup in Russia joined Spurs from Burnley in 2015. He would go onto play 114 games scoring two goals.

A New Start

Trippier had a difficult season, losing his place in the England squad as a result. He still played 27 Premier League games and 8 Champions League matches. However, his form after an excellent World Cup wasn’t what was expected. A fresh start could be what the full-back needs to regain his best form and win back his international place.

Madrid Beat Others For Signature

Atletico were not the only ones interested in Trippier. Italian giants Juventus and Napoli were both reportedly interested; however, Atletico, who had been monitoring the defender for several weeks, won the race.

Trippier joins Joao Felix who recently signed for £113 million and £36 million Marcos Llorente as Atletico’s new major signings. Felipe from Porto and left-back Renan Lodi from Athletico Paranaense have also joined.

Last seasons La Liga runners-up are looking to close the gap on Barcelona; however, they have lost Antoine Griezmann to the Catalan giants.

What Now for Spurs?

Whether Spurs boss Mauricio Pochettino decides to replace Trippier remains to be seen. He already has Serge Aurier and Kyle Walker-Peters at his disposal at right-back. He is also confident central defender Juan Foyth can fill in if required.

Pochettino is still looking to strengthen have already signed midfielder Tanguy Ndombele and Jack Clarke. William Saliba of Saint-Étienne, Real Madrid’s Dani Ceballos and Fulham’s Ryan Sessegnon are reported targets.
