Tottenham Extend Contract of Michel Vorm

Michel Vorm

Tottenham Hotspur have elected to activate the one-year extension option in the contract of goalkeeper Michel Vorm. Vorm was set to be released by the club and become a free agent as a result of his original contract coming to its conclusion. The Dutch goalkeeper is now contracted with the North London side until 2019. The 15-times-capped Holland international has often been deployed as a backup goalkeeper to Hugo Lloris. He arrived at the club from Swansea in July 2014 for a reported fee of £3.5 million.

Quality Backup

Michel Vorm is often considered one of the best backup keepers in the Premier League. At 34, the Dutchman also provides much-needed experience to a very youthful Tottenham team.

Vorm was a member of the Dutch squad that finished third in the 2014 World Cup, as well as accumulating over 100 Premier League appearances for both Swansea and Spurs.  It’s unlikely that Spurs would be able to convince a goalkeeper of similar ability to come and sit on the bench. Tottenham’s number one is Hugo Lloris, who is considered one of the top goalkeepers in world football. He is also the captain for both Tottenham and the French national side.

Additionally to being an experienced and Premier League-proven goalkeeper, Vorm is also very comfortable playing out from the back. This is very important for manager Mauricio Pochettino’s style of play.

In four years at Tottenham, Vorm has been the model professional. Despite accumulating only eleven Premier League appearances, the Dutchman has stepped up in the cup competitions when he has been required to do so. Vorm is important in these games. Tottenham often play younger or squad players against lower league opposition. Having an experienced goalkeeper behind them is a big benefit.

Despite his limited game time and first-team opportunities, Michel Vorm has never stepped out of line or expressed his frustrations in public.
