MK Dons Sign Goalkeeper Wieger Sietsma

Welcome back to Football Transfer News.

MK Dons have announced their third signing of the summer and their fourth for the upcoming campaign. 21-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Wieger Sietsma has joined them on a free transfer. He has spent his entire career in the Eredivisie, besides one loan spell to FC Emmen in the Dutch second division.

Career So Far

Wieger Sietsma started his career with GRC Groningen, the youth set-up at Eredivisie side FC Groningen. In 2006, he was promoted into the club’s academy, where he remained until 2015. Having never made a first team appearance for Groningen, Sietsma was transferred to SC Heerenveen for the start of the 2015/16 season. His career took off here, and he made over 90 appearances for the northern Netherlands side.

Despite his consistenet number of appearances, Sietsma was loaned to FC Emmen in the Dutch second division for the 2016-17 season, where he made six appearances as he played a back-up role to Dennis Telgenkamp. He made his debut early in the season, however, playing against Helmond Sport on 9th September 2016.

His Role at MK Dons

Before the signing was confirmed, the Dons only had one goalkeeper in the squad. The contracts of both David Martin and Charlie Burns were not extended at the end of last season. This left just Lee Nicholls in that position.

Dons manager Robbie Neilson said of the move: “Wieger came in at the back end of last season on trial and impressed. He then returned at the start of this season and really kicked on. He is a good young keeper who is developing all the time. We want him to come in to push and compete with Lee (Nicholls).” This suggests that Lee Nicholls will be promoted into the number one spot, with Sietsma taking up a secondary role on the bench.

On completing his move, Sietsma said: “It’s very exciting, this is a big club in a big stadium and I’m looking forward to the season. It was an easy decision to join. It’s always been a dream for me to play in England and I’m really excited to play at Stadium MK.”
