A WWE WrestleMania 42 graphic of Seth Rollins vs. Gunther, the latter being a prime future opponent for Brock Lesnar.

Gunther’s WrestleMania 42 Showdown with Seth Rollins Could Propel Him to Brock Lesnar

At WrestleMania 42, Gunther was originally scheduled to battle Rey Mysterio in a Career Killer Match. After retiring AJ Styles, Gunther was supposed to use his feud with Dragon Lee as a bridge to feuding with the leader of the LWO, but Rey unexpectedly got injured and was out for weeks to the point that the build for that match was no longer worth it. However, Rey did return, and WWE decided to insert a veteran like himself in the IC Title Ladder Match filled with upstarts to add some name value to the match.

Meanwhile, Seth Rollins was originally scheduled to battle Bron Breakker in a Vision Rivalry Match. Breakker did betray Rollins alongside Bronson Reed in October, essentially taking him out of commission and writing him off television to sell the legitimate injury Rollins sustained in his Crown Jewel World Title Match against Cody Rhodes.

However, Breakker also unexpectedly got hurt with a hernia injury and has been out of action for weeks to the point that the build for that match was also no longer worth it.

Gunther & Seth Rollins Are Directionless On The Road To WrestleMania 42

Now, Gunther and Seth Rollins are randomly battling at WrestleMania 42 since they are both top-tier, high-caliber superstars who deserve to be and have earned their spot on the card. From an in-ring perspective, this match should be an absolute banger, as this is a dream match for many pro wrestling fans.

However, to avoid contrived feuds and assure organic storyline progression, here is how Gunther can use Seth Rollins as a bridge to a career-threatening match against Brock Lesnar at SummerSlam in August.

Sometimes, in the world of pro wrestling, the journey is the destination. Most fans did not see this match booked because of the unexpected injuries. However, WWE can pivot and make a bigger story out of this match.

Gunther told Paul Heyman that he owes him a favor after saving him from the wrath of Seth Rollins, who returned from jail after unknowingly violating Heyman’s restraining order. Hopefully, this favor won’t be as bland as Heyman’s favor to CM Punk last year at ‘Mania 41.

Paul Heyman’s favor for Gunther Will Be Connected To Brock Lesnar

Heyman merely accompanied CM Punk to the ring in his first main event of Mania. Gunther is a brash Ring General who does not care about that sentimental nonsense. He will want something in return that will effectively benefit his career.

When he defeats Rollins and gets the job done for Heyman, he will want Heyman to hand-deliver him his most prized client, Brock Lesnar, on a silver platter for a retirement match at SummerSlam. Since Gunther is a renowned “Career Killer,” this favor would feed into his agenda.

Granted, Rollins won’t lose clean. Bron Breakker will likely return to screw Seth Rollins, protecting him in defeat. However, this is a must-win for Gunther so that he can be granted that favor from Heyman without hesitation.

Gunther is a sadistic, heartless individual and knows that his scheme will essentially make Brock Lesnar angry at Heyman and throw him off his game before his last match at SummerSlam. This should also assist Lesnar’s face turn after losing to and showing deserved respect to Oba Femi at Mania.
