Yeet! Jey Uso was out to start the show and as usual, the crowd was hot for the champ. After a video package recapping last week’s main event and the actions that followed by the new Paul Heyman guys, Uso made his way through the crowd to Yeet and then Yeet some more as the crowd called for the encore. That took us to about 8:10 as Uso opened up the show with his usual schtick. He was there to address Logan Paul’s challenge from last week. Uso called Paul out to the ring but was greeted by a different Paul instead. Paul Heyman.
Heyman said he wasn’t there to disrespect Uso but rather to say something to his face. Uso called Heyman out for his actions at WrestleMania to which Heyman echoed that he wasn’t the only one to betray Roman Reigns. Uso said from day one he warned everyone about Heyman. Heyman said he should have been warned about CM Punk, his best friend in the world, since no one bothered to tell him that Punk was going to put him in an unwinnable position. Heyman told the crowd to stop booing (spoiler alert, they didn’t) because none of them lived through what he did. Heyman said the crowd only chants for Punk because they don’t know what’s in his dark heart. Heyman said Punk put him in a position that would guarantee he’s have to sabotage his relationship with his beloved tribal chief. The crowd began chanting OTC as Heyman continued. His dream with Punk went way back before Reigns was even in a wrestling ring. Heyman wanted to be in Punk’s corner but Reigns didn’t trust him. Heyman screamed that he built the Bloodline for five years when he found Reigns as a stray big dog and that ‘we’ were the world champion. Heyman said he didn’t blow that, Reigns did when he lost the title to Code Rhodes. He lost the title that Heyman spent five years building him up. And then he disappeared to lick his wounds, leaving Heyman to the wolves of the new Bloodline. Heyman said Reigns didn’t come back to avenge him for getting put through a table, no he came back for the ula fala. Heyman was incensed saying he didn’t betray Reigns. All he wanted to do was help Punk live his dream and Reigns couldn’t handle it.
Heyman said Uso shouldn’t blame him as he got passionate about how he was in the right. He said screw you to Uso and screw you to the fans for booing. The crowd chanted ‘You suck’ and ‘asshole.’ Uso asked Heyman if he was OK and if he was done. He asked what any of this had to do with him. Heyman said he owed Uso an apology as he didn’t come out here to talk about Reigns and Punk. He came out to talk about Uso’s title. He won it because he wanted that title. It’s about power and control and Heyman doesn’t think Uso knows how to wield that. Yeeting isn’t it. It takes more to be a champion. So Heyman gave Uso a little warning. While Uso may want or need to be champion, Seth Rollins has to be champion. He has to have that power and control and Bron Breakker, that was just stage one of the plan. Stage two is getting the title. But Heyman said he’s actually out there to do Uso a favor. He’s going to let him sign his own death warrant by letting him pick the night he loses the title to Rollins. Heyman made the official challenge on Rollins’ behalf. Uso picks the time and place as Rollins is ready anytime, any place.
Uso cornered Heyman saying anytime, any place…it’s on tonight!
Backstage, Heyman caught up with Rollins and Breakker, unable to believe Uso fell for it. Rollins knew he would and left to prepare for the match as Heyman stayed back with Breakker, continuing to outline their vision. He said Uso was a great champion but he wasn’t prepared for this. Meanwhile, Rollins has been preparing for this because after beating Punk and Reigns, there was no one left.
The New Day were backstage with Chad Gable saying they wanted to give the opportunity for a tag title match to American Made and not the War Raiders before Becky Lynch came onto the scene and the cameras followed her to the ring. When action came back from commercial break, Lynch received heavy boos and ‘you suck’ chants. She said she wasn’t the bad guy, she was the victim. Everyone was so excited for Lynch to come down the aisle. No one cared about Bayley or where she was. She was garbage. Lynch took out the garbage. She was surprised that people didn’t thank her for taking out the garbage. And more than that, she took out the recycling when she took out Lyra Valkyria. Lynch said Valkyria would be nothing without her and would have nothing. She can’t understand why the fans are disrespecting her after all the good she’s done.
Valkyria made her way out to say Lynch is the queen of recycling, recycling the same move and tired old act for years. Lynch had nothing to do with Valkyria’s success. She didn’t make her. Valkyria said Lynch left and everyone got better. She left and Valkyria made history. But Lynch claims she’s what the championship needs even though Valkyria has defended it more times than Lynch has shown up to work this year. Valkyria said she sees it all clearly now. Lynch may have shattered glass ceilings but she left that shattered glass on the ground, with no intention of taking anyone to the top with her. Lynch said everyone only had a great year when she was gone because they didn’t have her to compare to. Lynch said she didn’t help anybody but it wasn’t her job to help anybody. She’s the greatest to ever do it and Valkyria will only ever be second best. Valkyria started listing Lynch’s achievements before saying she was the first women’s intercontinental champion and not Lynch. Valkyria said Lynch hates that she didn’t do that first but Valkyria told her to get used to being in second place. Then the war of the words devolved into a brawl as Lynch went for a cheap shot but Valkyria saw it coming. The action moved to the outside as Valkyria pushed Lynch into the barricade before officials came to hold the two apart. But it was all for naught as both women got away and went back to fighting in the ring. Valkyria hit Night Wing before holding the title high above her head.
Roxanne Perez was out to cut a commercial break promo where she cut down the Raw roster saying their stars were mediocre just like the city. She’s the Prodigy and she’s far from mediocre. She’s a former NXT tag team champion, 2x women’s champion. She’s the most decorated champion, male or female, to come out of NXT. Perez said that just because IYO SKY walked out of WrestleMania with the title, that doesn’t mean she’s the best. In fact, Perez promised SKY’s time on top was going to be very short.
Backstage, Chad Gable, the New Day, and the War Raiders were with Adam Pearce. New Day said opportunities should go to new teams and not rematches. War Raiders say they’ll take on the Creeds and take them out yet again so Pearce makes the match official. Back in the ring, Alpha Academy make their entrances as Otis is getting ready to take on Rusev.
Pat McAfee took the ring as the crowd rallied behind him. Pearce shook McAfee’s hand before introducing Gunther. Pearce said the two were free to say what they wanted but there would be no physicality tonight. Gunther went first as the crowd booed. He told Pearce not to worry as he wasn’t going to spoil Backlash for himself. He said he was professional unlike McAfee and Cole as the crowd chanted ‘you tapped out.’ Gunther told the fans to shut up as he turned his attention back to McAfee.
McAfee took the mic and said Cole is a goat as the crowd chanted for the legend. McAfee says for 28 years every week except for three times, Cole has traveled the world for WWE. He’s given everything to the the business so he’s earned the right to have an opinion. McAfee says he’s going to give Gunther his opinion. McAfee shouts out the Nebraska Cornhuskers at ringside and says when he comes to Omaha he thinks of their steaks, their football, and the field that has hosted the College Baseball World Series since 1950. McAfee says Omaha is a symbol of working hard and dreams coming true. He said the two of them have a lot in common. They both grew up with the same dream, wanting to be in this business, idolizing wrestlers and spending endless hours watching wrestling knowing that’s why they were put on this Earth. McAfee says Gunther has been at this for 20 years and he’s gotten jaded. It’s no longer a dream, it’s a job. But for McAfee, he’s still excited to come to work every day. He thinks about himself as a kid and the kids in the arena, dreaming about getting into the ring. McAfee says Gunther doesn’t want it anymore. He’s gotten too comfortable and on Saturday, he’s going to overlook him and underestimate him. McAfee says this version of Gunther is soft.
Gunther held up the mic as the crowd booed again. He asked McAfee if he enjoyed his daughter’s birthday. He bet it was a special day for him. Gunther said Saturday is a special day for him and McAfee got him into the right mood for it. He’s going to show up sharp, prepared, and more focused than ever before. He won’t overlook or underestimate him. He’s going to give him his full attention because when the bell rings he’s going to maul him and choke him out like a wet towel. But tonight because of his grace McAfee is untouchable. On Saturday, only the grace of God will lift his arms off McAfee’s throat. Gunther exited the ring as McAfee headed back to the commentary table.
