Davey Boy Smith Jr. Returns to WWE in SmackDown Dark Match

Davey Boy Smith Jr

Fans in attendance at Friday Night SmackDown’s live broadcast from Houston, Texas’s Toyota Center witnessed the surprise return of Davey Boy Smith Jr. to the WWE Universe. Smith, the son of The British Bulldog, Davey Boy Smith and pro wrestling personality Diana Hart Smith, has been absent from WWE for ten years.

It is unclear, as of this time, whether Smith is back full-time and on his way to contract status with WWE. He worked a dark match before the taping began, tagging with NXT’s Austin Theory of the stable The Way against Odyssey Jones and Xyon Quinn. It is unclear whether the dark match was a tryout or not.

Despite his unknown status, Smith seemed pleased to be back in an interview on WWE Network, and social media has reacted positively, as well.

The scion of the Billington and Hart pro wrestling dynasties, Smith spent his youth immersed in the WWE, then WWF, milieu, and soaking up tutelage in pro wrestling from his father, former WWF Intercontinental Champion British Bulldog, and uncles Bret and Owen Hart. Smith, childhood friend T.J. Wilson, and cousins Teddy Hart and Natalie “Natalya” Neidhart dove headfirst into the family business, and in 2006 Smith, Wilson, and Neidhart joined WWE as The Hart Dynasty. They would become WWE Tag Team Champions. In 2011, Smith was released from WWE.

His next venture was as part of the Killer Elite Squad, achieving the IWGP Tag Team titles on three occasions. Smith most recently appeared in Major League Wrestling as part of the New Era Hart Foundation alongside cousin Teddy Hart and Brian Pillman Jr. The New Era Hart Foundation were 1x MLW World Tag Team Champions. The group disbanded in 2020.

Although it is not certain what the future holds for Smith’s second go-round with WWE, the positive reaction to his return is a promising beginning.
