John Terry Talks How to Stop Erling Haaland

The quarter-final clash between England and Norway looks set to be a memorable one, with the Three Lions full of confidence after their brilliant win over Mexico in the last round, while Norway upset Brazil 2-1, with Haaland scoring both goals.

Reece James, Declan Rice, and Marc Guehi have all been concerns for Thomas Tuchel, but it’s thought that all three will be available for selection. Jarell Quansah will be missing after his red card against Mexico in the last 16.

Norway haven’t had the most ideal build-up with their camp hit by illness, but it is thought everyone impacted will be available for selection.

Terry Looks at Norway Danger Men and Stopping Haaland

Appearing on his TikTok, Terry looked ahead to England vs Norway, identifying the Norwegian danger men, while looking at ways to stop Haaland in particular:

“What a big game this is for the boys. Big game against a very good Norway side. We obviously know their big threats. (Martin) Odegaard for them. Oscar Bobb’s a big threat. More importantly, their main man (Erling) Haaland. And how do you stop him? I’ve been asked so many times. How do you stop Haaland? I’m actually not sure you do, with world-class strikers, with someone so tall, so dominant in the air, and so physical and so quick.

“If these boys are at it, I think it’s gonna be very difficult. But John Stones (and) Marc Guehi play with Haaland week in, week out. They’re gonna know his strengths, know his weaknesses, but just from a defender’s point of view, coming into this game – make sure that our wingers double up with our full backs. Make sure they’re aggressive and help our full-backs as much as possible to stop crosses coming into the box.

“The second point for me as a centre-half: have conversations with Jordan Pickford. Encourage him to come and collect, come and punch as many crosses as he possibly can and be really aggressive when he does that. The last third and final thing for me: as soon as that ball goes wide, do not lose focus on Haaland because he’s your big threat.

“So make sure you’re always touching, feeling, knowing exactly where he is and make it as difficult as possible for him to get a free run or a free jump above you. Now listen, he’s 6ft 7, very dominant. That’s very hard to do, but at the same time, you can make it very difficult for him to get a free header, and that’s definitely what you don’t want to do. If we can nullify these three big strengths of theirs, and like I said Haaland being the main one, I think we have a real chance of going through to the semi-final. Come on, England,” said John Terry.
