Wolverhampton Wanderers are set to lose one of their most important players after Atletico Madrid agreed a deal in principle to sign Joao Gomes. According to Sky Sports News, the Spanish giants will pay a £39 million package for the Brazilian midfielder, with the transfer expected to be completed when the summer window officially opens.
Gomes is expected to say farewell to Wolves supporters during Sunday’s final game of the season against Burnley. The 25-year-old leaves Molineux after establishing himself as one of the club’s standout performers since arriving from Flamengo in January 2023.

However, his value to the Wanderers extended beyond statistics. His aggressive pressing, relentless work-rate and ability to recover possession made him one of the Premier League’s most effective ball-winning midfielders. Even during a difficult campaign for the club, Gomes consistently delivered energetic performances and often set the tone in the middle of the park. His displays also helped strengthen his reputation internationally, although he narrowly missed out on Carlo Ancelotti’s Brazil World Cup squad.
Transfer Fee Could Aid Wolves Rebuild
While losing Gomes represents a significant blow, the transfer fee could prove vital for Wolves heading into a major rebuild this summer. The reported £39 million deal would represent a sizeable profit on the £15 million fee paid to Flamengo in 2023.
