Liverpool manager Jurgen Klopp has admitted that he doesn’t believe his side can financially compete with Premier League rivals Manchester City in the transfer market. This comes ahead of the Reds’ clash against Pep Guardiola’s side on Sunday.

Klopp Hints at Agitation at Erling Haaland’s Move to City
Ahead of his side’s massive match against the Citizens at Anfield on Sunday, Klopp opened up about the financial realities of the Manchester side as compared to his side – insisting that he doesn’t believe any Premier League club can really match up in terms of finances with the reigning champions.
He said: “Nobody can compete with Man City. You have the best team in the world and you put in the best striker on the market, no matter what the cost. We can’t act like them at Liverpool. It is not possible.”

This appears to be a jibe at Pep Guardiola’s side for spending £125 million in transfer fees in the summer transfer window – which included the high-profile acquisition of Erling Haaland. While they paid a transfer fee of around £54 million for the Norwegian goal machine – who has already scored 20 goals this season – the Citizens reportedly pay him weekly wages of over £850,000. These kinds of finances could be reason behind Klopp’s frustrations at nobody being able to match up financially with the reigning English champions.
Liverpool’s Summer Transfer Business Compared to Man City’s
The Merseyside club spent around £81 million in transfer fees in the summer window – which is over £44 million less than that spent by their Manchester rivals. The majority of Liverpool’s transfer fees were spent on the signing of Darwin Nunez – for whom they had to shell out £67.5 million to Benfica.

Klopp’s other summer signings – Fabio Carvalho, Calvin Ramsay and Arthur Melo – haven’t really improved his first-team, with the latter two yet to even make their debut for his side. City, on the other hand, have seen their transfers work really well – with Haaland himself having scored 16 more goals than Nunez already in all competitions this season.
Klopp seems a bit frustrated with Guardiola’s free reign in signing players, but will hope to get the last laugh by outwitting him on the field on Sunday.
