Arsenal Dealt Blow as Target Signs New Aston Villa Contract

Douglas Luiz

Fabrizio Romano recently revealed that Arsenal are considering bolstering their midfield in the January transfer window, with Douglas Luiz, a player for whom they had three different bids rejected by Aston Villa on deadline day, on that shortlist.

However, Luiz no longer appears to be a viable option for the Gunners, after Aston Villa officially confirmed that Douglas Luiz has signed a new contract with the club.

A Timely Renewal

Prior to this extension, the Brazilian’s contract at the club was set to expire at the end of the season, meaning that Aston Villa were at very high risk of losing the talented midfielder for free. Arsenal appeared to be the frontrunners to sign Luiz, either in January or on a free transfer in the summer, although a player of his calibre would have had plenty of options come the end of the season.

However, this contract extension now means that Luiz’s current deal at Aston Villa now expires in the summer of 2026 – strengthening the club’s hand and placing them in a position of power regarding any move involving the 24-year-old.

This contract renewal then represents a very smart piece of business by the Midlands club, not just because of the added financial security it brings, but also because of the quality of the player.
