Manchester United are due to crank up the pressure on Barcelona, as United still have an interest in forcing a move for Frenkie de Jong, reports Andy Mitten in The National. This comes following the Red Devils’ struggle to perform in the Premier League opener against Brighton & Hove Albion.

How Likely is an Agreement?
An agreement between Barcelona and Manchester United is increasingly likely by the day. Barcelona recently learned that they must sell De Jong, as the Catalonian superclub continues to struggle with issues stemming from financial mismanagement. The Red Devils are continuing to look for reinforcements after losing to Brighton on the season’s opening day, and De Jong has been one of the main targets for the club.
Is There Any Competition?
Whilst Barcelona need a sale, this isn’t necessarily to United. Chelsea also have an interest in buying the player. This season provides an opportunity for a significant rebuild at Chelsea, with players including Marc Cucurella and Raheem Sterling already joining them. Todd Beoehly’s impact on the Blues is looking to continue with the purchase of the adventurous and attacking Dutch midfielder this summer.
Does Frenkie De Jong Want a Move?
One of the trends throughout this window is a seeming lack of interest from the Dutch midfielder in a move. Frenkie De Jong remains interested in staying at Barcelona, and his goal in a pre-season friendly, followed by a salute to the crowd, only goes to further prove his commitment to Las Blaugranas.
The Netherlands international also has no reason to want a move. His place at Barcelona is ideal for presenting his own talents in a World Cup year, putting himself at the forefront of Louis van Gaal’s plans.

Whilst De Jong has less interest in the move than Barcelona (with the side still owing deferred wages), the transfer is increasingly likely. Barcelona are desperate to clear their books of expensive players to register new signings, and this move is a real test of the power players have at their clubs.
