Manchester United Close In on £176K Per-Week ‘Special’ Summer Signing

According to James Robson of Goal.com, there have been encouraging talks in the Frenkie de Jong transfer saga between Barcelona and Manchester United. Both sides have moved closer to a compromise on a transfer fee, thought to be around £69 million with add-ons.

The proposed transfer of De Jong has been a complex and protracted deal, with Barcelona wanting more than the Red Devils were prepared to pay. But with the latest round of talks bringing them closer to a compromise on the transfer fee, Erik ten Hag is closer than ever to his first Manchester United signing.

Manchester United and Barcelona’s latest round of talks has moved the De Jong transfer one step closer to completion, which will please Ten Hag, who has made it clear to the Old Trafford hierarchy he wants the Dutch star to be his centre-piece signing for the Red Devils.

Manchester United chief executive Richard Arnold is under pressure from supporters due to the lack of summer signings, but bringing the Dutch international to Old Trafford would go a long way to alleviate some of that pressure.

With Barcelona’s financial woes widely reported, they are keen to raise funds in order to sign their own targets such as Jules Kounde and Bernardo Silva, however, they have dug their heels in during the negotiations with Manchester United and refused to lower their demands for De Jong which were closer to £86 million.

But these latest round of talks regarding a compromise on the transfer fee has left the Old Trafford hierarchy more confident that they will deliver Ten Hag his priority transfer target, and reunite the Dutch manager with his former protege.

The Barcelona star is seen as the pivotal first piece in Ten Hags Old Trafford puzzle, who will provide a vital outlet to a defence that struggled last season. Ten Hag needs a player that can pick up the ball in deep positions and drive forward helping his team transition, and De Jong is perfect for that.
