With the tournament just a matter of weeks away, Sarina Wiegman has announced her Lionesses squad for Euro 2022. England will take on Austria, Norway and Northern Ireland in the group stages as they vow to be the side to come out on top. 16 teams will become one and having missed out on a podium spot in the last major tournament, the Lionesses will be hoping to go that little bit further.

The 23-Woman Lionesses Squad for Euro 2022 as Selected by Sarina Wiegman
The Players That Made the Cut
Starting in goal and this would normally be the position of most continuity. Mary Earps of Manchester United is the only mainstay in the Lionesses squad from 2019 with the young coming in for the experienced. Karen Bardsley and Carly Telford are no longer present whilst Hannah Hampton (Aston Villa) and Ellie Roebuck (Manchester City) have filled the void.
Moving up into the backline and it remains the case that the big three in the WSL dominate the Lionesses squad. Six of the seven names come from the Champions League sides. Millie Bright and Jess Carter are representing the title winners, Chelsea, whilst Lotte Wubben-Moy is in the corner of the runners-up Arsenal. Man City add three with Demi Stokes, Alex Greenwood and the outgoing Lucy Bronze, who are all experienced at this level. The final name is Rachel Daly of the NWSL’s Houston Dash.

The trend of domination from the best teams England has to offer continues in the middle of the park. Ella Toone (Manchester United) has had a scintillating season and she is the only exception to this rule. Leah Williamson is Arsenal through and through and having recently taken on the armband, she is a key figure in Wiegman’s plans. Along with her is Fran Kirby and another trio who sported the blue of Man City this season; Jill Scott, Georgia Stanway and Keira Walsh.

Finally, to the topic of the players who can make the difference in front of goal. Alessia Russo, as is the case with her teammate Toone, has performed particularly well at Leigh Sports Village and it hasn’t gone unnoticed. Nikita Parris and Beth Mead are continuing to fly the Gunners flag whilst Bethany England is the only Chelsea forward in the Lionesses squad. The blue half of Manchester is represented heavily once again in the form of young, speedy forwards Chloe Kelly and Lauren Hemp plus clinical striker Ellen White.

The Players That Missed Out
The headline omission from the Lionesses squad, for better or for worse, is Steph Houghton. Houghton has long been the captain for both club and country but has not been selected by Wiegman in her final 23-woman squad. Houghton made the initial training camp but, following a series of injury troubles throughout the season, hasn’t made the final cut.
Sandy MacIver is another absentee, the young Everton shot-stopper has just one cap to her name but was still in consideration along with some of the other English goalkeepers. Arsenal midfielder Jordan Nobbs has had an injury-plagued career and a knee ligament strain has dampened her hopes of going to another major tournament.

Katie Zelem, Lucy Staniforth (both Manchester United) and Niamh Charles (Chelsea) are the final three names that were in the provisional squad but won’t be in action for their country. The trio have a lot of competition in their respective positions, those being in midfield and at full-back.
England will get their tournament underway on July 6 against Austria at Old Trafford. Wiegman has chosen her final names for the Lionesses squad as they fight it out against the likes of Spain and Sweden for the ultimate prize.
