There has been a hit-and-miss history of players moving from the Eredivisie to one of Europe’s big five leagues. The likes of Luis Suarez and Robin van Persie came to the Premier League via the Netherlands. On the other hand, someone like Donny van de Beek has failed thus far with both Manchester United and Everton. Nice winger Calvin Stengs is another name who hasn’t quite made the grain, his time in Ligue 1 set to come to a premature end as per Santi Aouna.
Ajax Are Monitoring Nice Winger Calvin Stengs
How He Has Fared in France
Not only have we seen Nice steal title-winning manager Christophe Galtier away from Lille, but they’ve also delved into the Dutch market. Whilst Myron Boadu went to Monaco, Pablo Rosario and Calvin Stengs opted for Nice. Both Boadu and Stengs left AZ Alkmaar and neither has exactly thrived. Boadu has five goal contributions in less than 1,000 minutes. Calvin Stengs meanwhile has just one goal and one assist in his 23 Ligue 1 appearances for Nice.
Under Galtier, Nice have quite an exciting squad in truth. Calvin Stengs is part of this crop but has flattered to deceive thus far. The same can be said for his fellow countryman Justin Kluivert. Players such as Amine Gouiri, Kasper Dolberg, Jean-Clair Todibo, Youcef Atal and Khephren Thuram have led the way. Like with Memphis Depay, Stengs may well get another shot at this level, and deservedly so. It is becoming increasingly more likely that he will join Ajax though as they attempt to rebuild post-Erik ten Hag.
Where Nice Winger Calvin Stengs Would Fit In at Ajax
As previously mentioned, the departure of Erik ten Hag is at the forefront of any Ajax news. He is not the only key figure moving to pastures new and a whole rebuild is on the cards. Marc Overmars left his senior role at the club following misconduct. When it comes to players, there are a number who are linked with moves away. Sebastian Haller has attracted interest with young midfielder Ryan Gravenberch set to join Bayern Munich.
Alongside this duo: Andre Onana is Inter Milan-bound plus Antony, Jurrien Timber and Noussair Mazraoui have a plethora of potential suitors.
Stengs tends to operate off the right which is a position currently occupied by Antony or Steven Berghuis. Berghuis has the ability to play centrally and Brazilian Antony is unlikely to be an Ajax player for much longer. This opens the door for Stengs to play regularly under the new manager.
Calvin Stengs has previously displayed his talent in the Eredivisie and it appears he will be returning there to re-find his form. Ajax are a team consistently in the Champions League and so it is a very enticing offer for the winger.
