At our first landmark of the Premier League season, matchday 10 presents the opportunity for several sides to confirm their blistering starts to the campaign. Meanwhile, it could also spell the end of certain reigns, should results fail to turn – setting up a blockbuster weekend of action. One thing that is a certainty, is the goals we’ll see. With each week, England’s top flight continues to deliver on entertainment.
Such is the amount of goals flying into the back of the net, and the freakish results because of that, making predictions about the Premier League season is becoming harder and harder. We have still given it a go below, however.
Premier League Predictions: Matchday 10
Arsenal Travel to Leicester Hoping to Make a Statement
In uncharacteristically quiet fashion, Arsenal have been going about their business this season, slowly putting together a credible run of form. Mikel Arteta’s side haven’t lost since the 5-0 defeat against Manchester City at the end of August. Now at the end of October, the Gunners have gone on a run of eight games without a loss, which includes six wins.
Leicester City, in some contrast, have only just started finding their feet this season, rallying to defeat Manchester United, Spartak Moscow, Brentford, and, most recently, Brighton in the Carabao Cup. The Foxes’ return to form comes after four games without a win in the Premier League.
As the form suggests, we are set to get an even game at the King Power Stadium, and one that is increasingly difficult to predict.
Leicester City 2-2 Arsenal
Burnley Host Brentford
On paper, Burnley v Brentford looks destined for a frustrating stalemate. Thomas Frank may have different ideas, however, as the Bees look to sting a side once more. The 2-1 loss against Leicester City last time out, which made it back-to-back losses, would have disappointed the newly-promoted side. A trip to Turf Moore presents an opportunity to get back to winning ways.
Meanwhile, without a win all season, Burnley’s situation is looking more and more desperate. Sean Dyche will know just how important a win would be this weekend, especially as the season goes on. The longer the Clarets go without a win, the more likely the drop becomes and the more desperate their situation gets.
Burnley 0-2 Brentford
Unbeaten Liverpool Host Brighton
It’s fair to say that Brighton travel to Liverpool at the worst time possible. The Reds are unbeaten in 23 games in all competitions, and have scored 15 goals in their last four games, with a thumping 5-0 win at Old Trafford the highlight. Meanwhile, add into that, too, is the incredible form of Mohamed Salah. The Egyptian has scored in 10 consecutive games; the Seagulls will have a tough time putting an end to that run.
Graham Potter’s side will provide a sturdy test – more than the one United provided – but, ultimately, Liverpool should secure the three points once more. Having failed to win any of their last five games in all competitions, Brighton enter Anfield after a frustrating period of form.
Liverpool 3-1 Brighton
Manchester City Take on Crystal Palace
Manchester City v Crystal Palace could quite easily turn out to be the best fixture of matchday 10. Palace are no strangers to upsetting the Citizens, having done so in the 2018/19 season, winning 3-2 at the Etihad, much thanks Andros Townsend’s spectacular strike.
Three years later, both sides are contrasts of their former selves. Manchester City, without an out-and-out goalscorer leading the line, are still increasingly difficult to beat, with Pep Guardiola’s tactical approach working to perfection on most occasions.
Palace have also changed, however, with the Patrick Vieira era exciting many around Selhurst Park. Whilst the results haven’t always gone the Eagles’ way so far, the performances certainly suggest that things are on the up – creating an intriguing affair this weekend.
Manchester City 2-0 Crystal Palace
Newcastle United Host Chelsea in Matchday 10
Fresh off the back of a 7-0 demolishing of Norwich City, and a penalty shootout victory to advance in the Carabao Cup against Southampton, Chelsea take on a Newcastle side without a win all season. Now manager-less, too, the Magpies – despite the added finances – face a slippery slope towards the drop. They must kickstart their season, and soon. They cannot just simply wait for the January reinforcements. The fact is, it could be too late by then.
The visit of Chelsea comes at the worst possible time, and should only compile the misery surrounding Newcastle’s on-pitch form. Without a manager, and without a transfer window, the new owners will only continue to face reality checks.
