In the first signing of the Nuno Espírito Santo era, Atalanta goalkeeper Pierluigi Gollini is set to sign for Tottenham Hotspur. He will likely act as a backup to current number one Hugo Lloris.
According to Fabrizio Romano, the deal is a loan until 2022 with an option to extend another year until 2023 when an option to buy of €15 million will come in. The option to buy could become an obligation if the goalkeeper meets certain targets.
The deal, in truth, has come out of nowhere and highlights Spurs’ intentions to complete their business in the background of noise created by other clubs.
Tottenham Hotspur Set to Sign Atalanta’s Pierluigi Gollini
A Necessary Signing
Gollini is not exactly a marquee signing, but perhaps an important one; a necessary one with Joe Hart years past his prime.
By contrast to Hart, the Atalanta man is just 26 and in his prime. Under the tutorage of former goalkeeper turned manager Espírito Santo, he should enjoy further development, perhaps earning himself a permanent move.
Spurs’ greatest task next season will be returning to the top four. Never has it been so difficult to achieve a Champions League place in the Premier League. It is no longer the classic top six all vying for a place. Outsiders such as Everton and perhaps newcomers to the top six, Leicester City, are now competing for a place.
And that is why Spurs must get this summer right. Their main goal must be to keep hold of Harry Kane. He is the diamond in amongst what is becoming a squad full of unpromising rocks.
If they manage to keep the star striker, top four could be a possibility, but consistency will be needed. They cannot afford a poor start to the season. The Nuno Espírito Santo era must start on the right foot.
