According to BBC Sports’ Simon Stone, Manchester United goalkeeper Sergio Romero is to leave the club this summer, while talks to retain the services of Juan Mata are continuing.
Juan Mata Talks Continue as Goalkeeper Sergio Romero Heads to Exit
Romero to Leave Manchester United
Argentinian Romero has had a frustrating time at United and did not feature for the club in the 2020/21 Premier League season. He did look to leave Old Trafford but was not allowed to leave on loan either. Romero continued to train with the first team, but with his contract due to expire at the end of June, he is now deemed surplus to requirements at Old Trafford.
Dean Henderson has leapfrogged Romero and also David de Gea in the Premier League at times, and reports suggest the latter could also be heading for the exit door.
Juan Mata Talks Continue
Another player out of contract at Manchester United at the end of June is former Chelsea player Juan Mata and the midfielder is yet to sign a new deal with the club. His 2021/21 season has been frustrating; he started well, but then injury meant he was sidelined for February and March.
Any decision over the players future will be down to the player himself, and much will depend on whether he wants to remain a squad player under Ole Gunnar Solskjaer or seek a regular starting place elsewhere. Italian Serie A team Lazio are one club that has been mentioned as a possible destination but for now the Juan Mata talks continue.
After defeat in the Europa League final to Villarreal and finishing a distant second to Manchester City in the Premier League title race, Solskjaer will be looking for new faces to try and get the club back to the winning ways they were so used to under Sir Alex Ferguson.
