Lamptey Injury Requires Operation
Brighton & Hove Albion will be without defender Tariq Lamptey for the rest of the season as he requires an operation on his hamstring.
The right-back, who joined the Seagulls from Chelsea in January 2020, hasn’t played since a goalless draw against Fulham on December 16.
It’s a major blow for Graham Potter, who was hoping the defender would return before the season comes to an end. But the 20-year-old, who has scored once and laid on three assists from 11 Premier League games, won’t be in action until next season.
Speaking to The Argus, Potter said: “Obviously Tariq is still away as he hasn’t responded well with his hamstring.
“He looks like he will need surgery and he will miss the rest of this season.”
In an interview with Sky Sports, the Seagulls boss added: “It’s incredibly disappointing for him as you can imagine. We tried things, but surgery is now the best option and we have to focus on getting him strong and ready for the start of next season.
“It’s a big blow for him. We have kind of got used to him not being available as he’s been out for a while. It’s disappointing for us though.
“It tests you of course, but you can’t just replace Tariq Lamptey with Tariq Lamptey 2.0, we haven’t got that. Therefore you have to adjust your team and ideas.”
Lamptey Injury Comes at a Bad Time for the Seagulls
With Brighton slipping into a relegation battle, the news isn’t what supporters wanted to hear. The Seagulls are only above the relegation zone on goal difference and are without a win in their last five Premier League games, losing their previous three.
Potter takes his side to south coast rivals Southampton on Sunday, and with Fulham in action on Saturday night, Brighton could be in the bottom three by the time they kick-off.
Other Injury Updates
Graham Potter also confirmed that Aaron Connolly and Adam Webster will remain sidelined for the time being.
Twenty-one-year-old Connolly will miss the trip to St. Mary’s and the visit of Newcastle United but could return when Brighton travel to Manchester United at the start of April.
Potter said: “Aaron has got a cracked rib, but he is making good progress.
“But he will probably not be back until after the international break. It is sore at the moment and there is not much we can do at the moment.
“Adam is making good progress.”
