The lack of game-time for the 21-year-old had seen his name linked with a move away from the club. But now, according to Fabrizio Romano, Barcelona are unwilling to send their midfielder on loan.

It’s finally some good news to the Barcelona fans who have been treated with some of their worst performances in a very long time. The Blaugrana are not looking to transfer Puig out on loan, but, instead, are reportedly looking to extend the 21-year-old’s stay at the club to 2023.
There have been many speculations regarding the future of the 21-year-old following Koeman’s unwillingness to start the midfielder.
Riqui Puig, one of the best prospects to come out La Masia in recent times, has always spoken about his intentions to stay at the club. During an interview with Radio Cope in October, he said: “I think I’ll have minutes, that’s why I’ve stayed at Barça. I want to succeed at Barça and earn a position, I don’t see any other way. I’m very happy in Barcelona, I have my family, I think I’ll end up playing and have opportunities.
“Koeman trusts me, and he will give me opportunities to succeed in this Such a big club.”
A Year to Forget for Barcelona
After years of domination, the mighty have started their gradual fall. Barcelona have had one of their worst-ever years in a very long-time. The year started with the Blaugrana sacking Ernesto Valverde after three years at the club. The situation didn’t get better with his replacement Quique Setien struggling before facing the sack himself.
The pandemic didn’t improve their situation either for the Catalan giants. The closed doors matches have led to a huge drop in revenue for Barcelona and has seen them almost depleted. The last season ended with Barcelona surrendering their La Liga title after two seasons.
The situation went from bad to worse after they were handed an 8-2 drubbing by Bayern Munich during the Champions League quarter-finals. Just when everyone believed that things couldn’t go much worse, Barcelona’s greatest player Lionel Messi even declared his intentions to leave the club.
Despite Messi staying for another season, the situation has never really improved. The new manager, Ronald Koeman, has struggled to find his best formation. He has at times often been seen looking clueless while his bizarre substitutions have also not helped his case.
Barcelona will be hoping for a much better 2021, as they look to get back to their best.
