New York Red Bulls have announced the arrival of Gerhard Struber as their new manager.

Swapping Barnsley For New York

The MLS side have signed the 43-year-old as a replacement to Chris Armas, who was sacked in September.

Struber joined Barnsley in November 2019 and successfully kept them in the Championship, recording back-to-back victories in the final two matches of the season.

The Tykes would still have been in the bottom three but were made safe after Wigan Athletic were deducted 12 points for going into administration.

Stuber guided Barnsley to 14 wins from 28 matches after leaving Wolfsberger AC for the Yorkshire outfit.

Barnsley have struggled once again this season. Although they progressed through two rounds of the Carabao Cup – eventually exiting in a 6-0 loss to Chelsea – the Tykes have just one point from three matches in the Championship.

Struber’s Career: From Austria to Barnsley and Now to USA

Struber’s progression in management has come as something of a surprise to many.

The Austrian spent two years as a trainer for software systems, then eight years in sales and management, before quitting his job to focus on football in 2014.

He had already enjoyed a number of years working part-time for Red Bull Salzburg but took a full-time role with the Under-15 side in 2014.

In June 2017 he took on a coaching role with Austrian second-tier side FC Liefering. By the 2018-19 season, he had taken full control of the team before departing in January in order to complete further coaching training.

Struber spent a short spell with Wolfsberger – lifting them to third after 14 matches – and gathered four points from four games in the Europa League before heading to Oakwell.

Across sixty matches, shared between Wolsfberger and Barnsley, Struber has a win percentage of 41.67 per cent.
