The New Liverpool Left-Back – Who is Kostas Tsimikas?

Liverpool have completed the signing of Kostas Tsimikas from Olympiakos. The Greek international will be the first player to arrive at the Merseyside this season after penning a five-year contract with the Reds. The 24-year-old will be joining the Reds primarily as a backup to Andy Robertson.

But, who is Kostas Tsimikas, the second Greek international ever to play for Liverpool?

Kostas Tsimikas: Liverpool’s New Left-Back

Background

Kostas Tsimikas was born just outside the city of Athens. He started his youth career in the local club Neapoli Thessaloniki before joining the youth academy of Panserraikos in 2014. Three years later, the talented youngster moved to Greek giants Olympiacos. The full-back made his debut for Olympiacos in 2015 in a Super League clash against AEL Kalloni.

Limited first-team opportunities saw Tsimikas moving to Esbjerg and Willem II on loan before establishing himself during the 2018/19 season. Since his return, the full-back has made 86 appearances in two seasons. Tsimikas also made his international debut during this time.

Playing Style

Tsmiskas is similar to current Liverpool left-back Andy Robertson. Much like the Scottish international, Tsmiskas possess endless reserves of energy. The Greek international can run up and down the field throughout the 90 minutes.

The 24-year-old also possesses a wand of a left foot and has been a creative outlet for the Greek giants this season. In fact, the left-back has recorded seven assists in all competitions this season. He has also caught the eye with his defending. He has, in fact, recorded the highest number of tackles and interception in Europea for the Greek giants.

The Greek international doesn’t possess the athleticism of Andy Roberston but makes up for it with his defensive acumen. Like the Scot, Tsimikas has great tackling, dribbling, and crossing ability, but fares poorly in ball retention.

Verdict

As a back-up, Tsimikas is a great signing for Liverpool. The 24-year old is an upgrade on Neco Williams and the ageing James Milner. At 24, the Greek international has a long future ahead of him. With time, Tsimikas could realise his potential and become Liverpool’s first-choice left-back.
