With Champions League football secured ahead of next season, Chelsea will now aim to add to their squad with the addition of Kai Havertz alongside the already signed Timo Werner and Hakim Ziyech. According to Fabrizio Romano, talks have started between Chelsea and Bayer Leverkusen, with the Blues only willing to pay the £80 million asking price in add ons.
Once talks between the two sides are complete, the transfer should be completed. Romano stated that personal terms with Havertz were agreed weeks ago, leaving Chelsea with just Leverkusen to persuade.
Chelsea Begin Talks for Kai Havertz With Bayer Leverkusen
Havertz Being Made to Wait
With Werner and Ziyech already secured, Frank Lampard has turned his attention to Havertz. The Chelsea boss already has one of the best attacking teams in the league; add Havertz to that, and it looks almost unstoppable on paper.
Bayer Leverkusen will be keen to ensure a deal that suits both parties, however, and will likely drain every penny possible out of Chelsea, making negotiations potentially weeks long. This will leave Havertz playing the waiting game with personal terms reportedly already agreed with Chelsea. It is now down to Leverkusen to form a suitable deal with Chelsea.
Money Well Spent By Chelsea?
Frank Lampard’s first season in charge at Stamford Bridge has been somewhat successful. Chelsea eventually hit their target of top four, but their defensive weakness became exposed time and again. Throughout the season, Chelsea looked completely capable of going forward, yet completely incapable of keeping a clean sheet. This begs the question of, do they really need to spend on another attack-minded player while their defence remains inadequate?
Time will certainly tell whether Lampard and Chelsea decide to spend big on defensive reinforcements this summer; for now, however, the focus looks to be on securing the services of Kai Havertz.
