Japhet Tanganga Signs New Five-Year Contract at Tottenham Hotspur

Japhet Tanganga

Tottenham Hotspur defender Japhet Tanganga has officially signed a new five-year deal at the club. It was reported earlier this month that the 21-year-old would sign a new contract with the club, and now that he has done so, he is tied down to Spurs until 2025. Tanganga has made 11 appearances in all competitions this season since his debut against Liverpool.

A Breakthrough Season

This new deal comes as a reward for Tanganga after he broke through into the Spurs team this season. He was surprisingly handed a debut in January when he was brought into the team for the game against then-unbeaten Liverpool. The youngster went on to impress Jose Mourinho further, making 11 appearances in total.

Six of those appearances came in the Premier League, while three were in the FA Cup, one in the Carabao Cup and one in the Champions League.

Getting the Deal Done

Talks for this deal have not been plain sailing. Indeed, at one point, it looked like a new contract may not happen at all. The Athletic’s Charlie Eccleshare reported that talks had stalled because the defender felt he deserved a higher wage than what Spurs were offering.

The report suggested that after Tanganga signed a short extension through to 2021, he was earning £1,000 a week, and the new long-term deal being offered was worth £15,000 a week. It’s not currently clear whether Tanganga got his wish and Spurs were willing to add more money. Given that he was keen to stay at the club, though, he may have accepted that going from £1,000 to £15,000 was still a huge increase.
