The Championship top six are prepared to begin a legal battle if the current Premier League season is declared void.
Football across the world has been suspended in recent days as a result of the Covid-19 pandemic.
Premier League and EFL fixtures have been suspended until early April; however, there has been no indication as to how the remainder of the season will be conducted.
The Times, however, claim that the Championship’s top six – Leeds United, West Brom, Fulham, Brentford, Nottingham Forest and Preston North End – held a secret meeting on Monday.
The report suggests the meeting was to discuss their current position on the season’s suspension.
It is also reported that a conference call including the remainder of the league’s sides will take place today; this will be a follow-up meeting to discuss their proposals.
The report, by reputable journalists Matt Lawton and Martyn Ziegler, describes clubs as “seething”.
It comes in retaliation to comments by some top-flight clubs about possibly scrapping the current season.
At the weekend, West Ham United vice-chairman Karen Brady said in her weekly Sun newspaper column: “The only fair and reasonable thing to do is declare the whole season null and void.”
Understandably, many of the Championship’s sides want to have the remainder of the season completed even if it means the next campaign is delayed.
It is also understood that the top six clubs want all three promotion spots protected.
Two teams are promoted automatically to the top-flight with another battling for promotion through the play-offs.
However, suggestions that the current top two – Leeds and West Brom – could be added to a 22-team Premier League have frustrated the four teams currently occupying spots in the play-off positions.
