Swapping Premier League for Serie A

Pedro Obiang is close to completing a move from West Ham to Serie A side Sassuolo. It is expected that the 27-year-old will arrive in Italy to finalise his move in the coming days, as per a report by Sky Sports.

Obiang featured as a substitute in West Ham’s 4-1 friendly defeat to Manchester City in the Premier League Asia Trophy last Wednesday; however, the midfielder did not feature in the 1-0 loss to Newcastle on Saturday.

27-year-old Obiang, an Equatorial Guinea international, is due to have a medical at Sassulo this week. Ater making 116 appearances for West Ham, Obiang will return to Italy four years after his £4 million move from Sampdoria to the Hammers.

Budget Boosting Move for Hammers

By offloading Obiang the Hammers will generate extra transfer funds for manager Manuel Pellegrini. The Chilean is operating on a comparatively smaller budget at the London Stadium than other top-flight sides; however, the departure of Obiang would allow Pellegrini to strengthen his squad further.

It has been well reported that Pellegrini is keen to bring another striker to West Ham following the club-record signing fee of Sebastien Haller for £45million from Eintracht Frankfurt.

The Hammers could also, according to the Evening Standard, consider signing a replacement for Obiang; however, the London side already have Mark Noble, Declan Rice, Jack Wilshere and Carlos Sanchez.

West Ham are also keen to offload striker Jordan Hugill; although, the forward’s wage demands have delayed a move to the Sky Bet Championship.

Hugill has made just three substitute appearances for West Ham and spent last season on loan at Middlesbrough.
