The matchup with Morocco perhaps came too early in the tournament, especially with both sides starting well; Koeman certainly thinks so. “It’s a very important match between two teams that want to go as far as possible in the tournament and a match of this nature comes a little too soon at the World Cup,” Koeman said.

Although Morcoo didn’t top the group, they were one of the big talking points after the first few games. They managed to be competitive with Brazil, whilst picking up wins over Scotland and Haiti. Among the top performers, PSV’s Ismael Saibari scored in each game. Brahim Diaz has also provided two assists, both proving crucial in getting results.
Unlike their opponents, Morocco did make changes throughout the squad; coach Mohamed Ouahbi touched on this decision.“I was keen to distribute the playing time across the squad so that every player had the opportunity to participate. That also allows the whole team to be in the best possible condition,” he said.
Morocco has been on the up for a while now, and they are using the momentum perfectly. The current AFCON winners, World Cup semi-finalists in 2022, could they go one step further this time?
