Mexico Team News

Mexico had some squad rotation on matchday 3 against Czechia, a dead rubber game they still won handily to complete a 3-0-0 group stage, but it’s time for Javier ‘Vasco’ Aguirre to return to his first choice XI against Ecuador.

Winners of six straight matches, Mexico will continue with Raul ‘Tala’ Rangel in goal. Jesus Gallardo and Jorge Sanchez would be the first-choice defensive wingbacks and Johan Vasquez, Mexico’s defensive rock is certain to start at CB. The open question defensively is whether Edson Alvarez or Cesar Montes take the second CB role. Mateo Chavez scored and had a fantastic game against Czechia, there’s a case for him to replace Gallardo as a starter, the 22-year-old is pushing for selection. Israel Reyes and Sanchez continue to battle for the other wingback role.

In the midfield, Luis Romo is tabbed to continue, with Erik Lira. Brian Gutierrez is set to return to the midfield attacking role as well, though Gilberto Mora has been fantastic as a substitute and is arguably Mexico’s best player with the ball at his feet. Off the bench, also expect to see Alvaro Fidalgo, who is Mexico’s current highest rated player in sofascore.

The forwards would be the veteran Raul Jimenez, Julian Quinones who has two goals this tournament, and Roberto Alvarado.

Aguirre stated last week that he’s looking to Mexico’s younger players to begin to lead this team. ” There is an emotional balance, not the laudatory cry of ‘ole’, ‘ole’; nor do boos affect them. Young people, such as Mateo Chávez, Obed Vargas and Gilberto Mora are part of a generation of Mexicans that does not burn the ball; they grew up without complexes,”

These players may have a huge impact as substitutes, in a game that is expected to be defensively minded between two teams that know how to keep a clean sheet and maintain defensive structure.

Ecuador Team News

Ecuador has a lot of history playing Mexico in international tournaments. Javier Aguirre was Mexico’s manager when they beat Ecuador at the 2002 World Cup, a more recent clash featuring relatively current squads was at the 2024 Copa America, where a pro-Mexico crowd in the United States saw their team eliminated from the group stage by way of a 0-0 draw. Ecuador would advance and go on to lose to Argentina on penalties at that tournament. Their 2025 friendly was also a draw, as there’s not much to separate these sides.

Much has been said about Mexico’s “altitude advantage” at Estadio Azteca, already some of their group stage opponents have appeared sluggish and out of sorts later in matches. Ecuador has a number of players who grew up playing at altitude, but much of Ecuador’s current squad is based in Europe and no longer regularly do so. Conditioning over 90+ minutes will certainly be a factor in this contest.

Ecuador built great momentum after finally finding a way to score to defeat Germany 2-1 and advance. While Mexico has chased perfection in the group stage, Ecuador chased redemption from a slow start that featured a narrow loss to Ivory Coast, and a shocking draw against Curacao. They objectively played well against a solid Germany team and responded to adversity after going behind early.

The changes manager Sebastian Beccacece made to the lineup was a big factor in altering Ecuador’s fortunes. Gonzalo Plata scored the winning goal and should continue as a forward. Nilson Angulo was the other goalscorer, while Kevin Rodriguez was a super sub for veteran striker Enner Valencia, and both Alan Franco and Pedro Vite, who plays in Mexico’s Liga MX with Pumas were standouts in the midfield.

Ecuador has three players on this squad who play in Mexico’s Liga MX alongside or against many of El Tri’s squad. Vite, as mentioned, is a key player for Pumas who were great in the league last season, backup defender Jackson Porozo plays for Tijuana Xolos, and the veteran Valencia plays for Pachuca, having previously been a star for Tigres UANL. Valencia has appeared in 140 Liga MX games, but there’s still an argument to start the young Rodriguez, given his instant impact against Germany.

After the Germany result, Beccacece remarkedEnner is the living heritage and legacy of Ecuador, with the number of international caps, how he works, how he commits, how much joy he brings. That’s why I feel very emotional, because of my players, how they share, how they interact in a world full of egos.”

Moises Caicedo is the newly named captained for La Tri and is the engine of the midfield, Mexico doesn’t have a player of his value in Europe at this time. He would be joined by Vite, Angulo and John Yeboah in the midfield.

Ecuador’s backline is more settled, Piero Hincapie plays at LB, Joel Ordonez and Willian Pacho in the CB roles, and Alan Franco at RB with 39-year-old Hernan Galindez stable in the GK’s role.
