All three host nations have achieved the initial mission they set for themselves at the start of the 2026 World Cup campaign. Canada, Team USA, and Mexico’s El Tri will feature in the knockout phase of the tournament, with the USA and Mexico winning their groups outright after two games.
Mexico’s Battle Tested Consistency
Playing their first two games on Mexican soil, Mexico believed they were the favorites to emerge from group A, nonetheless, they had to actually go out and win the games, and that’s exactly what El Tri did. After a 2-0 win over South Africa where Bafana Bafana offered nothing going forward, El Tri faced off with South Korea in Guadalajara. Questions around the goalkeeper position going into the tournament were answered, when Raul ‘Tala’ Rangel put in a world class performance to keep a second consecutive clean sheet. Mexico only needed a bad goalkeeping error from the South Korean keeper to allow Luis Romo to poach the match’s only goal. Rangel and a backline led by Johan Vasquez was excellent, and South Korea will regret their chances to level the match.
While Mexico has yet to show a comprehensive offensive performance, they have managed to maintain defensive shape and control the ball in the midfield. The ability to play multiple knockout stage games in Mexico is also an advantage, as the nation is building belief and confidence they can avoid an early exit in the knockout phase.
Team USA Showcases Attacking Flair
Winning Group D at the World Cup, and doing so with a scoreline of 6-1 across two games against Paraguay and Australia is effectively a perfect result for Team USA. They kept Australia to a clean sheet and dictated possession. An early own goal gave the Americans the lead, before Alexander Freeman scored the dagger in the 43rd minute. Australia couldn’t find their way back into the match, and much like Mexico, the Yanks confidence continues to grow on an international stage.
Game 3 against Turkiye at the World Cup will allow Team USA to rest their starters, including Christian Pulisic, and allow some of the substitutes to get valuable minutes ahead of the knockout phase. The draw will heavily impact the United States fate in this tournament, but it’s clear that the primary hosts of this tournament have no failed to live up to expectations.
Canada Dominates Qatar, but Kone Injury is a Setback
Canada’s 6-0 win over Qatar was a huge contrast to their inconsistent performance against Bosnia. On four points, and facing Switzerland in the last matchday, a win or a draw would allow them to top Group B. A Jonathan David masterclass was the focal point against Qatar, he scored a hat trick, while Cyle Larin added his second goal of the tournament to open the match. Qatar were a disaster defensively and were eventually reduced to 9 men.
However, midfielder Ismael Kone will miss the rest of the World Cup tournament with a broken leg, and without him, while also still managing the health of Alphonso Davies, Canada’s potential is a bit more limited. Ultimately, a result against Switzerland without Kone would be a significant confidence boost for Jesse Marsch’s team.
