World Cup Matchday 1 Predictions Including Mexico vs South Africa

This Thursday, June 11th, the 2026 FIFA World Cup kicks off with a pair of Group A matchups. It’s Mexico vs South Africa at Estadio Azteca, while UEFA playoff qualifier Czech Republic (Czechia) takes on South Korea. Here is your look at both matchups.

Mexico vs South Africa (Thursday, June 11th, in Mexico City)

Mexico enter the World Cup at a renovated Estadio Azteca on a three-match winning streak. Javier Aguirre’s defensive tactics are pragmatic, but a five-goal outburst against Serbia has El Tri fans dreaming of a winning start to begin the World Cup journey. El Tri features three likely starters from Chivas, including goalkeeper Tala Rangel, and midfielder Brian Gutierrez. Fulham’s Raul Jimenez remains the veteran goal scoring presence, while Alvaro Fidalgo (Real Betis) roams the midfield, and Genoa’s Johan Vasquez has become a rock in the backline who can also move forward and score goals on set pieces.

Mexico are unlikely to blast through South Africa, but the Bafana Bafana are playing at altitude, and have struggled for goals themselves, as they depend on Burnley’s Lyle Foster to produce from the striker position. A free-flowing game feels unlikely, but Mexico finding a goal and then locking down South Africa should be how this tournament begins. Prediction: Mexico 1, South Africa 0

Czech Republic (Czechia) vs South Korea (Thursday, June 11th, in Guadalajara)

South Korea’s 3-4-3 formation is controversial in terms of creating chances, and that’s something both teams will aim to do in a match that could well have level odds for a draw at kick off. South Korea are a solid AFC side, though Heung Min-Son is still the key man at this stage in his career. The performance of the Czech Republic (Czechia) in this group could speak to the depth of the UEFA region in this tournament.

Everything for Czechia goes through Bayer Leverkusen striker Patrik Schick, this side is patient and depends on set pieces to create opportunity. The Czech midfield with players like Tomas Soucek (West Ham) will look to dictate this game. This is another matchup where a cagey affair feels likely, and a deadlock looks to be in the cards. Prediction: 1-1 Draw
